OR are they just an expensive, unnecessary, and even useless gizmo?

Whilst wandering around a renewables show recently I came across yet again, another company touting a piece of kit that removes air from the water of a central heating system. And yet again the savings claims were quite extraordinary – 20% -30%! And the costs of having these things installed is ridiculously expensive taken their production costs.

Now, I am talking about these ‘ornaments’ as I will call them, being used on domestic and small commercial wet heating systems and not larger wet heating systems.

My interest in these products is such, that I wanted to explore if they could be used in conjunction with our EnergySaver wet heating additive. However, and after some research, I wouldn’t use them or recommend them because they are simply not necessary for domestic or small commercial wet heating systems – so why waste money?

My research, undertaken with a very well established and respected company, that is active in the manufacture of micro-bubble air eliminators and other such equipment, was truly eye-opening. The technical expertise of this company is such that they have probably forgotten more than the companies currently selling these ‘vortexenergysaver’ type systems to the unsuspecting public.

After my research I have come to the conclusion that the fact is, most domestic and small commercial wet heating systems simply DO NOT need any type of ‘vortexenergysaver’ or micro air bubble removal kit installed on the system because, there are much cheaper ways to deal with ‘air’ in the wet heating system.

Here’s a quote from a very well respected energy and sustainability professional when I asked him “What’s your view on vortex air removal kit for wet heating systems?” ‘A simple automatic vent would do the job significantly cheaper’

One of my main concerns is the fact that the general public are getting bamboozled by science by the salesperson and resellers of these products, and the fact that the price of these heating ornaments range from £230 to £495+, and in some cases £800+ Now, to a lot of people that’s a pretty hefty wedge of cash to part with. But wait! ‘it can save you 20%-30% on your heating bills’ is the claim from the sales person – really, can it, please prove it?

If these ‘heating ornaments’ actually really work and do save 20%-30% on heating costs, why have none of them been included under the Green Deal as an approved product? After all one company claims to have sold and installed 4,000 units, so they must work – right?

Why are these pieces of kit not being used to combat fuel poverty. Helping people in fuel poverty to save 20%-30% must be a VERY high priority? Words like ‘unique’, ‘revolutionary’, ‘money back guarantee if you don’t save 10%’ and ’40year+ lifespan’ are used to promote these products, well that’s marketing for you!

When I asked a plumber, with 35 years + in the trade, “should I install one of the vortexenergysaver type systems to get rid of the air in my central heating system?” he replied…. “Why would you spend money on something like that? If you have air in your rads, just bleed them. And if the problem persists then you have a problem with the integrity of the systems”. “What do you mean?” “As I said, If you KEEP getting air in the system after bleeding the rads, then there is something wrong with the integrity system. I suggest you have the system checked and serviced”. Well, those are my thoughts on vortexenergysaver systems, what are your thoughts? Why not ask your local plumber what they think of these new fangled heating system ornaments?

I have republished this article after legal threats from a company named VORTEXENERGYSAVER and it seems that I am not allowed to have an opinion on any of their products. Please ensure that you check out all the alternatives before buying any energy saving product and ensure that the information you are given about any product is not misleading – one good question is ‘is the company selling the product the actual manufacturer of the product that they are selling or are they just resellers adding a margin to make a profit?’

Since writing this article I have come across this scientific research study that actually may offer a counter argument to the one above. It does however refer to the removal of both dirt and air, whereas my article focuses on air alone.
